Legally married couple, I’m sure there were plenty before then.

...are we not going to talk about that tie knot? WTF IS THAT?!?!?
8 Dec 2017 04:15 - +722
Couples like this made it easier for my husband and I to not feel the stigma when we got married. I couldn't imagine having to experience the racial tension of the 70's along with all the wedding craziness.

Those are some sweet chops tho
8 Dec 2017 04:07 - +215
I love this photo because I imagine how much it used and still piss off so many racists
8 Dec 2017 05:49 - +167
Which Beetle is that? Edit: I can’t believe autocorrect turned Beatle into Beetle. C’mon autocorrect. You’re better than that.
8 Dec 2017 05:46 - +145
The fuck is up with his tie
8 Dec 2017 03:55 - +85
Damn shes fine
8 Dec 2017 06:44 - +79
Fun fact, interracial marriage was illegal in the state of Alabama until 2000. Hard to believe that was happening in our lifetime.
8 Dec 2017 05:08 - +57
I wonder if someone refused to bake them a wedding cake
8 Dec 2017 00:44 - +49
Lovely!
8 Dec 2017 05:55 - +45
The only way it became legal was for a white man to marry a black woman. If it was a Black man with a white woman, he would have been hung/lynched and the white woman socially castigated.
8 Dec 2017 06:04 - +32
Anybody else think this guy looks exactly like Paul McCartney?
8 Dec 2017 05:46 - +30
Dude married up.
8 Dec 2017 05:50 - +20
Only 47 years ago. Crazy.
8 Dec 2017 05:53 - +18
1970 in Mississippi. That's basically like 1950s still. This is one tough couple.
8 Dec 2017 05:21 - +18
That dude in the background just LURKING hahaha he looks pissed about it..
8 Dec 2017 05:56 - +17
Why does he look British?
8 Dec 2017 05:41 - +17
So we not gonna talk about homie's tie? Jesus
8 Dec 2017 05:58 - +16
It's not a "tie". It's supposed to be an ascot. Ususally worn with a morning coat which his suit appears to be. Also, since it was the 1970s, it was probably already tied when he got it and it clips together at the back. Mystery solved. BTW, great pic of this couple.
8 Dec 2017 06:21 - +16
Damn they cute
8 Dec 2017 05:45 - +16
The Groomsman's eye in the background. What is it saying?
8 Dec 2017 06:32 - +15
In my mid fifties and I still can’t believe this was an issue when I was young. My friends and I could not care less about race. We lived in a pretty diverse suburb of Chicago and we looked like the kids on Sesame Street. We didn’t even give it a thought because it didn’t matter.
8 Dec 2017 05:59 - +15
Love this. Well, hate the fact that it took two centuries to happen. My wife and I were married in Bama in '02- I would've loved to have some dipshit tell me that two active-duty soldiers couldn't get married 'cuz of Jim Crow laws.
8 Dec 2017 07:13 - +12
I live in Canada and my girlfriend is black. I get way, WAY more verbal abuse from black men than I do anyone else when we're out in public together.
8 Dec 2017 04:18 - +6
So insane to think that this was only 2 years before my dad was born. 1970! Crazy how much has changed for the better in such a short time!
8 Dec 2017 05:49 - +5
The photo bomber to the right looks pissed!
8 Dec 2017 06:22 - +5
I'm getting really good vibes from this photo.
8 Dec 2017 05:36 - +5
Awesome!
8 Dec 2017 06:43 - +5
Is it just me or do they look high AF?
8 Dec 2017 07:05 - +5
Really good looking couple. Their children must’ve been gorgeous
8 Dec 2017 06:44 - +4
It's absolutely ridiculous that it took as long as the 70's for this to be considered a "real" marriage
8 Dec 2017 05:39 - +4
They're both ripped.
8 Dec 2017 06:49 - +4
Dude in the background made me lol
8 Dec 2017 08:13 - +4
White Mississippian here who recently was in a two year interracial relationship. In 2017, we received funny looks. My family wasn't comfortable with the fact I was dating a nonwhite. I can not imagine the amount of harassment these two trailblazers had to endure to be together. Thank you.
8 Dec 2017 08:06 - +3
"First Interracial Couple"? I think we need to talk about a little history, because I double that this was the first time a black person and a white person were together in Mississipi. Title needed proofreading.
8 Dec 2017 06:58 - +3
They look pretty baked.
8 Dec 2017 07:13 - +3
They are beaming with love. They probably had gorgeous kids.
8 Dec 2017 07:11 - +3
As a Mississippian this still makes me happy to this day.
8 Dec 2017 06:36 - +3
I'm sure Mississippi has had lots of interracial couples in its history. May not have been completed voluntary but they certainly coupled up.
8 Dec 2017 05:58 - +3
I wonder where they are now.
8 Dec 2017 06:50 - +3
Lol check out the creepy guy on the far right of the screen
8 Dec 2017 06:53 - +2
They both loom high as shit
8 Dec 2017 07:06 - +2

8 Dec 2017 07:25 - +2
Is anybody else curious about where they are today?
8 Dec 2017 07:42 - +2
Mississippi Queen!
8 Dec 2017 06:50 - +2
That is legit romantic and warming the cockles of my heart. Usually I take a crap on marriage but this is actually very meaningful and lovely <3
8 Dec 2017 05:50 - +2
No one going to mention the angry photobomber?
8 Dec 2017 07:01 - +2
Sort by controversial to find racists.
8 Dec 2017 05:59 - +2
So awesome
8 Dec 2017 07:08 - +2
This was literally reposted a month ago
8 Dec 2017 06:23 - +2
You can’t help who you love. And if they love you back, buddy, you do what you have to to keep her.
8 Dec 2017 07:22 - +2
Relax guy in background. There are other black women around.
8 Dec 2017 06:31 - +2

8 Dec 2017 07:27 - +2
