Incredible feat for the gorillas, congrats!

Wow, this is a big step forward for gorilla photographers!
13 Feb 2018 20:13 - +550
Ok first off, it’s great that you included a picture of the gorilla in question, but a link to it’s portfolio would really help.
13 Feb 2018 21:53 - +244
I am a bit confused. Who won? This man, gorilla, or the photographer who took this photo?
13 Feb 2018 21:56 - +171
Congratulations to the gorilla for winning photographer of the year!
13 Feb 2018 21:38 - +98
Wikipedia is already claiming rights to her photography

Probably the first time a selfie got someone Photographer of the Year, judging by the title.
13 Feb 2018 21:33 - +36
Who did the Gorilla hugging man save? Why’d that warrant him winning Photographer of the Year.
13 Feb 2018 21:51 - +32
The gorilla really deserved it, I've seen a lot of his work
13 Feb 2018 22:06 - +31
TIL - A gorilla has won a Photographer of the Year award

13 Feb 2018 21:16 - +23
This was a nice way to start the day
13 Feb 2018 21:54 - +21
Was going to make a comment joking about the gorilla winning the award, then the post loaded and I seen everybody else did the exact same thing.
13 Feb 2018 20:19 - +18
The photographer, Jo-Anne McArthur, isn't in the photo. The title on the article is misleading.
13 Feb 2018 23:17 - +15
Photographer Jo-Anne McArthur took the photo in Cameroon, as this rescued gorilla was being moved between animal sanctuaries. [Jo-Anne says](http://www.nhm.ac.uk/about-us/news/2018/February/wildlife-photographer-of-the-year-53-peoples-choice-winner.html?utm_source=tw-image-post-20180213-zs&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=wpy53-pc-competition), 'I'm so thankful that this image resonated with people and I hope it might inspire us all to care a little bit more about animals. No act of compassion towards them is ever too small. 'I regularly document the cruelties animals endure at our hands, but sometimes I bear witness to stories of rescue, hope and redemption.'
13 Feb 2018 21:56 - +12
Have we got the photo that the gorilla used to win this almighty award?
13 Feb 2018 22:00 - +9
Mama Gorilla is so proud.
13 Feb 2018 22:10 - +9
Nobody even think about saying it,
13 Feb 2018 22:14 - +8

ITT: people complimenting the gorilla for winning Photographer of the Year
13 Feb 2018 23:22 - +7
I shudder at the idea of people killing great apes. It's tantamount to murder, IMO.
13 Feb 2018 21:53 - +7
I couldn't tell the dude was wearing a shirt with super loose sleeves, so I thought he was swole as fuck for a minute there.
13 Feb 2018 22:12 - +7
That smile from the gorilla. I've always been absolutely amazed by how human they can seem. What a great shot.
13 Feb 2018 21:54 - +7

13 Feb 2018 22:19 - +6
jesus.. good thing that guy had a bond with the animal. animals coming out of anesthesia can be easily startled or confused from the lingering effects of the drug. even if the chimp knew the man well, there is a chance the chemicals in it's brain could have clouded his judgement. I'm very glad this didn't happen. Excellent picture. Excellent Cause. Fuck the poachers that killed his/her mother.
13 Feb 2018 22:44 - +6
The emotions that this picture evokes are pretty amazing.
13 Feb 2018 22:14 - +5
Gorillas getting smarter and smarter, now they're winning awards?
13 Feb 2018 22:16 - +5
Now that's a photo I can get behind.
13 Feb 2018 22:16 - +5
A small step for humanity, a giant leap for Gorillaity.
13 Feb 2018 22:23 - +5
You can feel how deep that man's love towards gorillas is just by looking at his expression. The way he smiles reminds me of a mother's smile :)

Appolinaire Ndohoudou Is the guys name
13 Feb 2018 22:23 - +4
The picture is epic even without the context story. Especially for being black and white.
13 Feb 2018 22:32 - +4
The finalists are all breathtaking photographs. That one had the lady who took it wait 6 days in the freezing cold to snap it, incredible.
13 Feb 2018 22:45 - +4
All of these unfunny comments about the gorilla taking the photo
13 Feb 2018 22:53 - +4
You asked for this OP
13 Feb 2018 22:03 - +3
Hamarambe is smiling down on us.
13 Feb 2018 22:34 - +3
How beautiful!
13 Feb 2018 22:22 - +3
Harambe would be proud!
13 Feb 2018 22:42 - +3
It’s taken in Cameroon at Ape Action Africa, a primate rescue center which takes in orphans from the bush meat and pet trade. The mans name is Apolinaire, one of the gorilla keepers, and the gorilla is Pikin. Taken by Jo-Anne McArthur. They were moving him to a new forest enclosure. It’s a wonderful place that deserves all of the exposure they can get. I volunteered for them 10 years ago, I had a baby chimp that I took care of 24/7 that slept in my bed every night.
13 Feb 2018 23:31 - +3
Appolinaire Ndohoudou has the nicest smile.
13 Feb 2018 21:42 - +3
I like the polar bear pic better
13 Feb 2018 23:49 - +3
Who is gorilla?
13 Feb 2018 22:06 - +3
In all honesty how can you compete with this? Like the other finalist photos are amazing c'mon I'da thrown in the towel when I saw this.
14 Feb 2018 00:00 - +3
Everyone is making the same joke in the comments. Welcome to Reddit.
13 Feb 2018 22:40 - +3
Is it ok to smile at a gorilla?
13 Feb 2018 22:19 - +3
The gorilla didn't even take the picture though.
13 Feb 2018 22:01 - +3
Where were you when Harambe needed you?
13 Feb 2018 22:30 - +3
Came here expecting the top 3 to 5 comments being about gorilla photographers. Was not disappointed.
13 Feb 2018 22:33 - +3
This comment section makes me happy. Thanks everyone for sending me off to sleep with a little bit more faith in humanity than before ❤️
13 Feb 2018 22:23 - +2

13 Feb 2018 23:16 - +2
Hugging... Holding on to... A bit fuzzy on Gorilla kinaesthetics.
13 Feb 2018 23:58 - +2
I'm glad the gorillas are finally getting some recognition after the death of our Lord and savior Harambe. #ballsout #neverforget #stilltoosoon
13 Feb 2018 22:53 - +2
Shouldn't it be *Photograph* of the year? Specially since neither the man or the gorilla are the photographers.
13 Feb 2018 23:29 - +2
I saw this on the Gorilla channel.
13 Feb 2018 23:31 - +2
This is gonna get reposted by so many karma-stealing gorillas.

13 Feb 2018 22:08 - +2
How long until PETA tries to give the award and rights to the photo to the gorilla? Edited for incorrect primate classification.
13 Feb 2018 22:37 - +2

13 Feb 2018 22:37 - +2

I was expecting a mod message asking people not to be racists thanks to some idiot's comment like "who's who?" I'm proud of you reddit
14 Feb 2018 00:14 - +1
Are you sure he's not just sitting there wondering what the hell just happened?
14 Feb 2018 00:56 - +1
I was warmed immediately after seeing the picture. I stared at it for a few seconds. The man's warm glance as he's looking at the Gorilla, almost as if he's fulfilling something that humanity often does; looking after and protecting beings that are not able to protect themselves. Then I started to read the story behind the picture and felt sick. I felt a knot in my stomach when I realized that this is a fragment of "good" in an immeasurable realm of "bad" things that humanity does towards other beings on this planet. I stopped reading and instead scrolled up to just stare at the picture. I can't make sense of why humanity can be so evil, yet so beautiful at the same time.
14 Feb 2018 01:04 - +1
That smile is something that money can't buy.
13 Feb 2018 22:07 - +-5
This is the Reddit I used to remember before the advent of The_Donald and Huffingtonpost articles on the front page: "Trump doesn't lift the toilet seat when he pees, is this a sign to his Russian handlers?"
