I assumed it was trying to strike/catch prey in the snow. [kinda like this](https://youtu.be/V_M3trffAWI)

When I don’t fit in my pants anymore
13 Feb 2018 21:08 - +64
Following such a majestic landing, too!

So, I actually know something about this. I was watching the BBC show - Yellowstone: Wildest Winter to Blazing Summer. The reason this owl failed is because winters are warming up. And instead of the snow being nice and soft, it's started to thaw during the day, then freeze solid at night. This is making it very difficult for the owls to hunt. And it still looks awesome.

That moment when you fucked up your gameplay and didn't quick save before to get a flawless achievement.
13 Feb 2018 22:02 - +9
You can tell it’s not his first time by how flat his face is xD
13 Feb 2018 22:44 - +6
This is bad though. The surface layer of snow melts in the day because it's warm and turns to ice at night. This is becoming more of a thing because of global warming and the owls aren't eating.

Don't lie, that initial landing was dope as fuck.

ahhhh ain’t life just amazing 😁
13 Feb 2018 23:35 - +1
owls have relatively small brains due to their large eyes taking up so much room in their skulls. Sorry if this ruins owls for anyone else.
13 Feb 2018 23:03 - +1
Oh. He like holes!
13 Feb 2018 23:47 - +1
Always makes me feel good to see a usually graceful animal doing something clumsy and dumb. Like "yea we're all the same. Good."

13 Feb 2018 23:09 - +1
This was *almost* /r/natureismetal material. But, then, this majestic animal is a metaphor for my whole life. I appreciate this much more. Random thought: Has anyone watched the new Planet Earth and seen all of those powerful predators built for hunting just totally womp, and then be like...wow that guy (lion) gets it. ? :)

13 Feb 2018 22:24 - +1
This owl did not skip leg day, holy shit.
13 Feb 2018 23:22 - +1
That first look is the same look I have after tripping over myself. "WHO SAW THAT?!"
13 Feb 2018 22:28 - +1
HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN TO MEEEE
13 Feb 2018 23:25 - +1
I like how he seems to look up to see if anyone noticed.
13 Feb 2018 22:30 - +1
He jiggled, I giggled.
13 Feb 2018 23:26 - +1
Errol???
13 Feb 2018 22:31 - +1

13 Feb 2018 23:31 - +1

13 Feb 2018 22:31 - +1
Majestic as... aww fuck.
13 Feb 2018 23:45 - +1
In what sense was that not graceful? I feel like all of this was intentional. Gif ends too soon to determine if the attempt was successful.
13 Feb 2018 22:37 - +1
We’ll get em next time.
13 Feb 2018 23:53 - +1
The fact that it can land full speed on the snow without punching through the snow layer amazes me.
13 Feb 2018 22:39 - +1
You know it had to hurt because it's eyes dilated as if to say "Shit, *ow*"
14 Feb 2018 00:08 - +1
Well, your big lunk dome just ain’t gonna fit sir
13 Feb 2018 23:23 - +1
I never noticed this before, but owl feet look like mini tree stumps.
14 Feb 2018 00:32 - +1
It's Erroll at it again! The Weasleys will never receive their post at this rate

14 Feb 2018 00:43 - +1
Anybody else think of the fox diving into the snow on the Grasslands episode of Planet Earth II?
14 Feb 2018 00:28 - +1
The way he landed was badass. All I can think about is if it was any bigger how fucked we would be lol
14 Feb 2018 00:34 - +1
That face expression. Priceless...
14 Feb 2018 00:28 - +1
That was unexpected...was so damn graceful all the way through.

She just thought it was her nest. That's why she put her nose down as a "Yes this is my nest". Then she covered it. Obviously.

There was an attempt... By the OP to understand what's going on. This owl is using hunting behavior. They are able to hear tiny sounds under the snow to locate small burrowing creatures with pinpoint accuracy. This one may or may not have snagged its prey, but it's definitely hunting behavior, not uh, jumping into a hole...
