To add to the weird facts people are stating about these creatures, Platypuses have 10 sex chromosomes. Humans have 2, 1 combination gives female and the other gives male. The strange thing about Platypuses is that there is also only 2 combinations that occur with these 10 chromosomes, either 10 X for female or 5X and 5Y for male. This really makes you question how independent assortment of chromosomes occurs and throws a giant wrench into the simplest form of genetics.

Even as an Australian, I never understood why we decided to name such cute critters after the mother of all monsters from greek myth. I guess we got accustomed to the old scientific name that means she-viper, which is a bit of shame as indigenous names such as biggie-billa and tullatoola are quite fun to say out loud. Then again, echidna is a better name than the Australian/New Holland porcupine or Australian/New Holland anteater.
