This is an illustration by Tom Gauld who produces thoughtful and funny drawings, and would never stick a huge unnecessary slogan under his work to “explain it”.

The triad of nationalist populism: The People, The Elite, The Other. The Elite has betrayed The People by allowing The Other to thrive in their place. The solution: remove The Other so The People can prosper.

Same with racism. White supremacy seems to appeal to people who have literally nothing else to take pride in other than the fact that they were born white, as if thats their personal accomplishment. Theyll take credit for any thing white people have ever done (while ignoring the bad).

[George Carlin's rant on patriotism and nationalism](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O8AI_0F1ts) > I saw a slogan on a guy’s car that said “Proud to be an American.” And I thought, well, what the fuck does that mean? Proud to be an American. You see, I’ve never understood national pride. I’ve never understood ethnic pride. Because I’m Irish, and all four of my grandparents were born in Ireland, so I’m fully Irish. And when I was a kid, I would go to the St. Patrick’s Day parade, and I noticed that they sold a button that said “Proud to be Irish.” And I could never understand that because I knew that on Columbus Day, they sold a different button that said “Proud to be Italian.” Then came black pride and Puerto Rican pride. And I could never understand ethnic or national pride because, to me, pride should be reserved for something you achieve or attain on your own, not something that happens by accident of birth. Being Irish, being Irish isn’t a skill. It’s a fucking genetic accident. You wouldn’t say, “I’m proud to be 5’11”. I’m proud to have a predisposition for colon cancer. So, why the fuck would you be proud to be Irish or proud to be Italian or American or anything? Hey, if you’re happy with it, that’s fine. Do that. Put that on your car. “Happy to be an American.” Be happy. Don’t be proud. Too much pride as it is. Pride goeth before a fall. Never forget Proverbs, OK? Now, here’s another slogan. Here’s another slogan you run into all the time. “God bless America.” Once again, respectfully, I say to myself, “What the fuck does that mean?” God bless America. Is that a request? Is that a demand? Is that a suggestion? Politicians say it at the end of every speech as if it were some sort of verbal tick that they can’t get rid of. “God bless you and God bless America. God bless you and God bless America.” I guess they figure if they leave it out, someone is going to think they’re bad Americans. Let me tell you a little secret about God, folks. God doesn’t give a flying fuck about America, OK. He doesn’t care. He never cared about this country. He never has. He never will. He doesn’t care about this country any more than he cares about Mongolia, Transylvania, Pittsburgh, the Suez Canal or the North Pole. He simply doesn’t care, OK. He doesn’t care. Listen, good. There are 200 countries in the world now. Do these people honestly think that God is sitting around picking out his favorites? Why would he do that? Why would God have a favorite country? And why would it be America out of all the countries? Because we have the most money? Because he likes our National Anthem? Maybe, it’s because he heard we have 18 delicious flavors of classic Rice-A-Roni.........

Damn if the leader/despot thing doesn't sound familiar.

This is a quote from a libertarian lmao. Doug Stanhope.

It worries me when I'm in a leftist space and people shit talk nationalism without qualification. How about anti-colonial nationalism? How about Puerto Rican radical nationalism? There are progressive nationalisms. This 'no borders anywhere' shit is anarchism and it ignores the reality of imperialism.

If you haven't read it or are unfamiliar, Benedict Anderson's scholarly *Imagined Communities* (1983) is a groundbreaking analysis of the inherent contradictions of nationalism. For a massive oversimplification, see [this wikipedia entry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imagined_community). A quote: "[a nation] is imagined because the members of even the smallest nation will never know most of their fellow-members, meet them, or even hear of them, yet in the minds of each lives the image of their communion." Highly recommend.

I don't consider myself a nationalist. But where I am from, the nation is represented, in the food, the culture. I was born into my culture, ate the food, followed a law. A nation is a construct of course, but culture is something different I don't know if this makes sense. I live in a place that had human settlements for tens of thousands of years, the nations pass but the culture builds itself, the food, the architecture, religion, law, music, art. I don't know, a nation isn't just a people and a border to me. But I understand the feeling of Americans feeling lost in the world.

Ah, the daily showing of this sub on my feed is as usual not a legitimate critique of capitalism.

How is this exclusive to, or even more prevalent in, capitalism?

As if that's a bad thing? WTF that's like saying you shouldn't be proud of other people's accomplishments or proud of your parents or your friends.

>I hadn’t met Western 'revolutionaries' before. It turned out they represented an unfamiliar cultural rather than a political phenomenon. Some seemed to have read the history political literature of the left, but most regarded the Marxist-Leninist leaders disdainfully, with the exception of the 'Young Marx,' who held some sort of fascination for revolution. Some Americans were quite serious and believed in the historic mission of the working class and were making plants to integrate themselves with the masses. >**What astonished us most about this group was that they were opposed to nationalism, a doctrine we hold dearly as a colonized and dissipated people.** -Leila Khaled Not all nationalism is the same.

I would say this really applies to any form of Statism as a whole.

I usually like the stuff this sub posts but this is simply nonsense , the term nationalism is not colonialism. Small countries can greatly benefit from nationalism.

As someone from Ireland I read that as British Invaders. Typical.

Idk, nationalism is a powerful antidote for imperialism in Latin American social movements so I say it depends sometimes
15 Feb 2018 07:30 - +3
Not sure nationalism and capitalism are closely related. Nationalism is the friend of despots in either kind of regime.
15 Feb 2018 06:43 - +3
Read that as 'their British invaders' at first
15 Feb 2018 06:52 - +2
america is the worst culprit for this
15 Feb 2018 07:48 - +2
I agree with the sentiment of this illustration, but did this phenomenon not take root in medieval feudalist society rather than post-capitalist society?
15 Feb 2018 07:37 - +2
Nationalism and national chauvinism are all too often conflated. Nationalism can be a powerful tool of national self determination and identity for the oppressed masses. Just ask the Kurds (in Turkey), the Palestinians, etc. It becomes reactionary and parasitic when coopted the Euro-America imperialist but then again what doesn’t.
15 Feb 2018 08:04 - +2
To be fair I can hate people I met as well
15 Feb 2018 08:05 - +2
That's the literal definition of Euro centrism not nationalism
15 Feb 2018 04:27 - +2
Isnt that a Doug Stanhope line?
15 Feb 2018 04:21 - +2
We are all villains to somebody.
15 Feb 2018 07:12 - +2
Isn’t this more applicable to socialism? 😂 Socialism teaches you to take pride in shit you haven’t done (stealing resources from wealthy people) and hate people you’ve never met (aka the bourgeoisie). You guys are great with the satire of socialism, keep it up! 👌
15 Feb 2018 06:25 - +2
People stare into the eyes of their neighbor only to forget that they are mirrors and treat them as if their neighbor were impossibly other. We're all the same thing, our biggest enemy for thousands of years has been ourselves. When people work together their power only grows.
15 Feb 2018 07:28 - +2
There's a large nationalist sentiment on this sub I didn't realize existed until now.
