The charging port on this Apple Magic Mouse makes it unusable whilst charging

This is the result of design over functionality. Which is the opposite of what Apple use to stand for.

Seriously just search the word “mouse” there’s like five more pics of this mouse in the first few results.

The true mildly infuriating thing here is that they still ship the mouse with a USB Type A cable which isn't compatible with their Mac laptops. You literally can't charge the mouse without either buying a separate USB-C Lightning cable, a USB adapter or a power adapter.

How many times will this mouse be posted here? Once more it would seem...
17 Apr 2018 15:46 - +474
I'm sure there is a dongle you can buy from Apple for $29.99 to fix this.
17 Apr 2018 17:32 - +314
But it takes 30 seconds for a day’s charge!? Hardly that inconvenient!
17 Apr 2018 18:41 - +233
I can’t tell you how many times this has been posted here despite the fact that apparently just leaving it plugged in for a few minutes gives you multiple days worth of use. I guess people just need a reason to whine about everything.
17 Apr 2018 17:34 - +118
Or it might be their way of telling you "Don't use the mouse while it is charging"
17 Apr 2018 18:11 - +88
Considering that the mouse can last for weeks on end, and takes little to no time to charge up, I’d say this isn’t that bad
17 Apr 2018 15:00 - +71
the batteries last forever howd you even let it die
17 Apr 2018 17:34 - +67
As discussed many MANY times on this sub, it's so you don't just leave it plugged in all the time and lower the lifetime of the battery.
17 Apr 2018 18:37 - +44
I'm far from an apple apologist but the circle jerk about this mouse is ridiculous. You can literally get hours of use out of less than a minutes charge and once full it'll last for weeks if not months. It's a complete non-issue
17 Apr 2018 18:28 - +41
It gets a full day of charge in just 2 minutes. plug it in and go take a piss or grab a drink. by the time you get back it will be charged enough for the rest of your day. Then plug it in when you're done with it for the day and you'll have a full charge when you return. Everyone bitches about this but putting the charge port on the front like a normal mouse would result in everyone using it as a wired mouse and they didn't want that.

I just chuckled for a good half a minute.

Two minutes plugged in gets you nine hours of use. Plug it in and go grab a cup of coffee, stretch, check the mail, something, and you’ll be ready to go before you know it. I swear to god this is the most overblown thing on the internet.
17 Apr 2018 18:33 - +16
This is intentional. I charge mine for about 20 minutes every month or two. It charges so fast and lasts so long, they don’t want people keeping it t plugged in 100% of the time
17 Apr 2018 19:04 - +13
Used one for a while, charge for 30 min and use it for 2 weeks, not as bad as everyone making it out to be.

Okay I've got a question. What was the point of using "whilst" in this sentence? It adds nothing. "While" would have made just as much sense, and wouldn't make you sound like a douche.
17 Apr 2018 19:55 - +6
Everytime I see this picture I think of the same thing: Apple 100% did this on purpose because if you could use the mouse while it was charging, no one would unplug it, and it would lose its "magic" of being wireless
17 Apr 2018 20:18 - +5
It’s intentionally designed that way because it cannot be used whilst charging. But with a 120 second charge (2 minutes), it goes for 9 hours. On a full charge, it goes for “several months”. Plus it shows your exact battery level right in the status bar and gives you alerts and warnings if you’re gonna run out. So plug it in when you go take a piss and you’ll be OK for a few days 😂

Apple actually did this on purpose, they didn’t want people to have the mouse permanently plugged in as it would ‘ruin’ the design, so they intention built it this way to stop that from happening
17 Apr 2018 20:56 - +4
What the hell is wrong with you people? I see nothing wrong here. You want a mouse with a cord? Don't buy wireless. Did you want the luxury of Charging a Battery While using it? Kid that's some space age technology you're babblin about... but I like the vision you have of our future.
17 Apr 2018 19:54 - +4
I hear ya, but it takes about 2 minutes to get a 9hr charge. I can take a break for two minutes. I’m more chapped about not being able to connect my iPhone to my Mac without a dongle, not being able to listen to music while charging my phone (a dongle with lightning headphone support does not exist), and not being able to use the headphones that come with the latest iPhone with the latest Mac. There’s plenty to bitch about for everyone 🎉
17 Apr 2018 19:50 - +4
This is done intentionally to stop people using it plugged in all the time because it doesn't move as smoothly. 2 minutes charge lasts a full day and 2 hours lasts 2 months. They also wanted a design with no visible ports.

I like teasing apple for all sorts of things, but the battery life on this mouse is unreal. My wife has had hers for a year and has charged it a grand total of 1 time.
17 Apr 2018 19:51 - +3
Dude charging only takes 30 minutes. It is a crappy design but not too annoying
17 Apr 2018 19:39 - +3
That's not on accident.
17 Apr 2018 19:27 - +3
Luckily a 5 minute charge will give you days if use.
17 Apr 2018 20:17 - +2
That’s the point. You aren’t supposed to use it as a wired mouse. And iirc, you can get a good charge out of it in about 10-15 minutes. So just Plug it in and grab yourself a piece of toast, then when you are done, you have a charged mouse.
17 Apr 2018 20:37 - +2
This time there is a benefit: You cannot leave it plugged in forever, which would decrease your battery capacity lifetime. Also you only have to charge this thing like once per season.

Here's a thought. Charge the mouse when you're not using the computer?
17 Apr 2018 20:26 - +2
The mouse charges in like 30 minutes and lasts easily a month with the charge tho
17 Apr 2018 20:22 - +2
No longer an Apple user, but, back when they first introduced the Magic mouse I was still diehard about their previous wired mouse. Such a weird design with a satisfying click. Apple has honestly always made the most bizarre mice.
17 Apr 2018 19:13 - +2
So charge it when you're away.
17 Apr 2018 20:27 - +2
Yes. I think we all kvetched over this about five years ago.

I used this type of mouse at work for a few months, and as much as the placement of the port seemed stupid and inconvenient when I had to charge it the first time, it never was a problem again after that once. My primary issue with it was definitely the weight and shape. The shape is really flat and unergonomic so finding a comfortable resting position was impossible. The fact that the mouse was too heavy and had too much friction with the table/pad beneath it was also an issue as it meant I was using my pinky too much whenever I was moving the mouse to the left, which was really giving me tendon issues. In the end I had to switch it out for a random cheap mouse just to be able to work. It might be fine if you don't have to use it constantly for hours at a time, and I could understand why some would enjoy the gestures for it, but I'd prefer any other mouse I've tried so far.
17 Apr 2018 20:38 - +2
the only good thing is that a full charge lasts for 1-2 months (atleast for my mouse). so charging it for a few hours wasnt that big of a problem for me

Ah I remember when people who weren't in a coma first talked about this a few years ago.
